SHMIRAH
Sitting Shomer: Honoring a Sacred Tradition
In Jewish tradition, the act of sitting shmirah is a time-honored custom where a shomer (guardian) stays near the deceased, offering comfort and protection. The shomer recites from the Book of Psalms, ensuring the body is respectfully watched over from the time of death until burial.
Why Do We Sit Shmirah?
This ancient practice began as a practical way to protect the body from animals and the elements. Spiritually, it’s believed that the soul remains concerned for the body until burial, and having a shomer ensures that the deceased receives proper care and dignity in accordance with Jewish law.
How We Help
While not every family requests a shomer, for those who do, Dressler's Jewish Funeral Care coordinates with a dedicated team of shomrim to cover shifts from the time of death to burial.
